The Westvale Way
Another year has begun and 410 students at Westvale school in grades JK-6 are back and ready to learn. The Westvale Way - caring, courtesy and co-operation - defines who we are and how we act. Our students "learn to care" so that they "care to learn." Each month we celebrate a school wide goal that builds upon the attributes set out by the WRDSB Character Development program - Respect; Initiative; Empathy; Hope; Kindness; Co-operation; Social Responsibility and Integrity. When students know they are safe and respected, they are free to learn.
Climbing to our Goals!
Our learning goal aligns with our WRDSB system learning goal - to improve our ability to express our thinking in written form. Written communication is a necessary tool for success in our society today and we strive to ensure that each student develops the skills and tools needed to reach his/her potential. Teachers use high yield instructional strategies and tools to deepen understanding and reach all students needs. Our focus at Westvale this year in all classrooms is twofold 1) the use of student exemplars to provide students with models of successful work from which to work and to set goals for improvement and 2) the use of open-ended critical questions in instruction to deepen thinking and encourage students to expand their viewpoints and consider alternative perspectives.
Westvale is Golden!
Westvale is a gold Eco school where we proudly practice conservation of energy, recycling of waste, re-use of materials and reduction of waste products. We look after our environment both at school and within our community. We have two tracks for learning in grades 1-6 - French Immersion and English. Our students have many leadership opportunities such as Eco green team, PAL's (playground leaders), learning buddies, library helpers, lunch room helpers, and classroom helpers. We play hard and work hard - always with respect and excellence. |
